Cedar Mesa

Recent trip to Cedar Mesa to do some hiking and try for a sunrise shot of a site near Citadel. I woke at 3 a.m. to hike out to the site. After doing a few star photos of the main site, I moved to this structure at the end of the mesa. While I was photographing, I enjoyed the calls from a pair of great horned owls in the darkness. The black and white photos […]

Green River Lakes… done differently

This was my fifth trip (maybe) to the Green River Lakes area. This time, I had an idea to paddle across the big lake, up the connector, and across the second lake. I really wasn’t sure exactly how far we would make it. With loaded boats, we didn’t have the power to make it up the connector during July flows. We got about a third of the way up the connector and found a pretty […]

What lurks in the dark

We recently went to the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. Aside from birds and monkeys, most of the wildlife comes out at night. We took a couple guided night walks. Here are a few of the animals we saw.

A window to the world

I have been working on a new style of frame lately and am ready to show off the finished products. We have enjoyed the simplicity of a canvas print mounted into a wood frame. When hung on the wall, they appear to be a window to the outside world. They are remarkably lightweight and without a glass pane, they don’t present a risk of broken glass everywhere should someone knock it off the wall. The […]

Front yard visitors

I haven’t had many opportunities since the Bears Ears trip to sneak out for a photo adventure. Luckily, the poppies were going strong this year in the front yard. Each morning for about an hour or two, the bees would visit before it got too hot. One day, before settling in at my desk, I took a moment to photograph some of the visitors before the poppies ran their course.

Tunnel vision

A couple weeks ago, we found ourselves having to quickly change vacation plans. Luckily for us, we have the Bears Ears National Monument nearby. We researched a few areas that we hadn’t explored yet and settled on a few toward the south end. Our first stop was near a spring that created an oasis. I really enjoyed this particular panel of Native American petroglyphs. Camping near the springs, I could see similarity between the current […]

A lot of patience and a little luck

One of the things I really wanted to see during our backpacking trip through Torres del Paine National Park was a guanaco. We had backpacked the standard W-shaped route and even spent a couple nights across the lake from the route just to soak in the view. Having not seen a single guanaco, we gave it one last try while we waited for the bus to take us back to Puerto Natales. Near the bus […]

Barriers

In 2022, we visited Organ Pipe National Monument along the Mexican border with Arizona. While the natural beauty was striking, this scene of a saguaro set against the border fence struck me. The visual similarities of the harsh, vertically oriented protection of the cactus and the fence felt connected as if the fence were mimicking the already harsh nature of the desert. The difference between the two being that the cactus’ ribs can expand and […]

Peaceful, wild horses

I have been out to visit the wild horses of the Onaqui herd in the west desert of Utah on many occassions. The thing that has struck me is that they are rather peaceful compared to the typical imagery one sees of sparring mustangs. While that does occur, I want to show the softer, gentler side of these fantastic animals. Here, a pair of horses watch over a newly-born foal at sunset. These photos are […]
